This performance had a lot of depth to it. I was expecting a story about the beginning to end of the school-to-prison pipeline, knowing that's generally what the performance was about. It was much more impactful than that. This performance shows the impact micro aggressions and generalizations have on children of color. One micro-aggression added to other stressors in the home is that extra push to set a child up for failure. This is the extra stress that white children do not endure, putting them at an advantage. I also take away the importance of communication. As adults, we must understand that although they may look like adults, adolescents' brains are still developing. In the dialogue between Omari and his mother (Nya) in the beginning really shows Omari not knowing how to talk about what happened in a way his mother would understand. This doesn't come out until the end in the dialogue between Omari and his father (Xavier) where their conflict comes to a head. This performance gave me hope that we all can set our youth up for success by sharpening up our skills of identifying micro-aggressions. We can remain calm, provide a safe environment for children to talk about what happened during unsafe situations, active listening (asking questions for clarification, and to gain specifics) and to advocate for children and adults of color who have been victims of micro-aggressions. Investigations of situations such as what the performance discusses, should also be looked at from a race equity perspective to see where racism and microaggressions impacted each situation to help us understand even more where we can do better.
